(Washington) Legislation was re-introduced in Congress Thursday that would allow Americans in a same-sex relationship to sponsor their “permanent partners” for legal residency in the United States, a right currently afforded only to opposite-sex couples under immigration law.
The Uniting American Families Act was filed in the House by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY). Nadler has been fighting for the bill for nearly eight years. With Democrats now in Control of the Congress and the White House Nader said Thursday he is hopeful the measure will become law. “In 2009, we should be ready as a society to acknowledge that stable American families come in all varieties,” said Nadler.
“We in fact strengthen our communities – and our nation – by encouraging loving couples and families to stay together and live as cohesive units. Any committed couple deserves the potential to form a life and a family together – this is a basic human right – and whether that couple is gay or straight should be irrelevant. Gay and lesbian Americans in loving, committed relationships deserve the same rights as everyone else. ”Because the U.S. does not legally recognize same-sex couples and their children as families, many same-sex bi-national couples are torn apart when one partner lives in the United States. The Uniting American Families Act would add the term “or permanent partner” to those sections of the Immigration and Naturalization Act that apply to legally married couples.
“Permanent partner” is described as an adult who is in a committed, intimate relationship with another adult in “which both parties intend a lifelong commitment.” The legislation would afford equal immigration benefits to permanent partnerships - but would also apply the same restrictions and enforcement standards.

LIFESTYLE & CULTURE

Wanda Sykes to make fun of President Barack Obama.
The spokesperson for the comic actress said Wanda has been selected as the entertainer at the annual White House correspondents’ dinner in Washington.
President Obama is expected to attend the black-tie affair at the Washington Hilton. The guest list of some 2,000 people will likely include the usual mix of Washington elite, White House press corps and Hollywood celebrities.
Sykes, who booked the gig this week, said the idea of performing for such a high-profile crowd is “scary but very exciting. ” Sykes, 44, has established a comic identity around her blunt, feisty personality. Sykes appears on “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” and first made a name on TV with stints on “The Chris Rock Show” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Outburst UK is proud to present "She Wasn't Last Night". This first feature-length romantic drama of its kind about black same gender loving women gets its premiere in the UK as part of LGBT History Month. The film will be followed by a Q&A with its director Darice Jones.
"She Wasn't Last Night" follows the beautiful activist Shantel Crockett who is slammed by drama as her relationship with Reyna, 10 years her junior, begins to crumble. To make matters worse, charming player Jack (Jacqueline) is determined to make Reyna hers - if only for one night. With her jewellery-making talent long-abandoned, and her mounting feelings of failure in her work supporting LGBTQ Youth, Shantel is forced to face Reyna's despair and decide what kind of life she wants for herself. Shantel’s best friend Vanessa encourages her to move on and find meaning her own artistic expressions, and maybe even in a new love. Meanwhile, one of Shantel’s youth, Afro-Dominican poet Reggie, struggles to find her own path and discover her own voice. With the help of a small community of good friends and mentors, both Shantel and Reggie learn lessons they will never forget.
Griot Soul Films does not save the drama for your mama! In fact, the cast is made up of an eclectic group of social activists, artists, educators, professional actors, beginning actors, and even an engineer.
